Joe Schumacher
Joe
got interested in woodcarving watching carvers demonstrate
their art in the early 70's in the Valley Road Woodcarving
shop at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. He wanted
to give it a try, but he, like a lot of people who see carvers
in action, thought that he did not have the ability to carve. After 20 years of hearing this lame
excuse, his wife bought a set of carving tools as a
gift for his birthday and made him finally to give it a try.
He began carving in 1990. Soon after, Joe became a member
of the St. Louis Area Woodcarvers, the Belleville Holzschnitzers,
the National Wood Carvers Association, and the Affiliated
Woodcarvers Congress. He was the seminar chairman for
7 years with the Belleville Holzschnitzers, so he knows the
benefit of taking classes and practicing. He scheduled many
of the C.C.A. members to teach classes with the Holzschnitzers
over this time. He has taken over 80 classes, 28 with past
and present members of the C.C.A. Classes he
has taken include clay, stone, drawing, and caricature drawing. He
has taught a number of classes in the Midwest. He has
also judged several woodcarving shows. He enjoys both
realistic and caricature carving. Joe became a member of
the C.C.A. in the fall of 2005.
Joe
has been married to his wife Fran for 34 years. They
live in Imperial, Missouri. They have four sons Joey
(32), Matt (25), Jon (23), and Nick (21). Joe retired
in May of 2000 from Daimler-Chrysler after 32 years
as an auto-worker. Joe enjoys watching people's expressions
as they look at his caricature carvings to see if they
do or do not get the idea he's trying to get across.
He starts his original pieces up as drawings or
in clay. Joe now goes back to the Valley Road Woodcarving
shop , this time, as a guest carver demonstrating
for others who hopefully will give woodcarving a try.
Joe is available to judge exhibits and shows and to teach
seminars on woodcarving. His carvings are available for
sale. You can e-mail him at jfshoes@sbcglobal.net
